The second gathering of Gentlemen Wine Snobs took place in the private wine cellar room of Bleu Provence and included an illustrious assortment of gorgeous Chardonnay wines from California AVA’s of Spring Mountain, Sonoma and Carneros as well as a show stopper from New Zealand that truly impressed the group. The Gents continued the evening with a delicious and decadent French dinner paired with two lovely bottles of 2009 Chateau Lascombes Margaux Grand Cru. A wonderful recommendation from Bleu Provence Advanced Sommelier Clement Cariot. Last but not least, a delicious Sauternes from Chateau de Rayne Vigneau with dessert. What a fun indulgent evening! (See the wines we tasted below)

This month’s gathering is being hosted by one of our esteemed members at his private residence here in Naples. Due to logistics, meal planning, etc, the gathering is limited to just 6 Gentlemen Wine Snobs.

Group members are encouraged to bring a bottle of red wine from anywhere in France from any vintage.
A bottle of 2016 Clos Marey-Monge Monopole from Chateau de Pommard, a tiny wine producer located in Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France will be one of the bottles served and discussed.
The Chateau Story…
Founded in 1723, Château de Pommard is one of Burgundy’s oldest wine estates, located in the Pommard appellation in the heart of the Côte d’Or and protected by UNESCO.
Our estate is home to Clos Marey-Monge, a geological marvel with seven distinct soil compositions that produce some of the world’s most outstanding Pinot Noirs. These biodynamic and organic-certified vines bring forth our flagship cuvées, crafted to express the unique essence of our vineyard.
Our philosophy is to always maintain a hands-off approach and allow Nature to remain in control, and while our vineyard team is invaluable, we entrust the vintage to do the talking. The seven distinct soils of Clos Marey-Monge are each hand-harvested, fermented, and aged separately, following a vinification process that employs as little human intervention as possible. It is only at the last possible moment that we step in and create a balanced blend of the seven cuvées.
The wine…Soils
The largest monopole in Burgundy, Clos Marey-Monge benefits from a unique environment protected by a two-meter-high stone wall. Positioned at the base of the hill of Pommard, the complexity of our vineyard’s soils comes from the alluvia, sand and gravel carried by the Avant-Dheune river a thousand years ago. Our blend of the seven cuvées from the limestone and clay-rich soils of the Clos creates a deep, elegant, and sophisticated Pinot Noir.
APPELLATION Pommard
AGE OF VINES 20 to 120 years
The winemaking…
Hand-harvested grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table. 100% de-stemmed, placed into stainless steel fermentation vats by gravity flow. Weeks-long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down. Pressing in pneumatic press. Placed in French oak barrels for aging on fine lees. Not filtered.
HARVEST September 10, 2016
AGING 20 months in 30% new French oak barrels
PRODUCTION 32,500 bottles or 2700 cases
The wine…
The nose is intense and youthful, full of violets, ripe strawberries, red plums and sweet spices such as cinnamon. The palate is well-rounded and velvety, mixing freshness, salivation, and a long finish. Behind its ruby color with deep purple tints, Clos Marey-Monge Monopole 2016 is a dense, concentrated, and very well-balanced wine, definitely age-worthy. Its floral and fruity aromas make it a pleasant wine to enjoy today, but it is worth waiting a few years to taste it at its best.
ALCOHOL 13.6%
SERVING TEMP. 16°C
DRINKABILITY Now to 25 years
